Green Heron

The drainage ponds in our community attract geese and ducks.  On a recent walk, I noticed this fellow.  I'm pretty sure it is a juvenile green heron.  I had never seen one before.

I could find no information about this recreation of a mine office located behind the passenger wait station pictured in yesterday's post. I found it to be pretty whimsical with the water wheel and the wooden tombstones along the side.  Note also the backwards "N" in the sign as well as the sign designating the "Essay Office".

This passenger wait station was built by the Seaboard Air Line Rail Road in 1900.  After passenger service ended, the station was restored and now serves as an historical marker and memorial to the early 20th century days of railroading in Van Wyck, SC.

Duncan McDonald arrived in Waxhaw in 1888 and was one of the earliest men to establish a residence and a business in Waxhaw.  This residence is perhaps the oldest residence in Waxhaw

My wife wanted palm trees.  So we got some palms.

 

Adam's Needle

We planted these yucca filamentosa plants about 3 years ago when we put in our patio and did some additional landscaping. They're commonly referred to as Adam's Needle. This year they produced these lovely blooms.

There always seems to be quite a bit of traffic in downtown Waxhaw.  This is a pretty typical scene.  It gets worse when a train blocks just about all the side streets in Waxhaw.

The Kaleidoscope Festival was held on Mother's Day weekend this year.  This florist gave away free bouquets to all the moms.

Each spring Waxhaw hosts the Kaleidoscope Festival featuring various artisans, businesses and food trucks.  This particular artisan cuts up old license plates and makes customized vanity plates from the old plates.
