You Are Here

Waxhaw, NC  2026

I've always wondered how accurate our GPS systems are.  In this case the sign's latitude is very close to what was recorded to my phone, then to my camera:

Trail Sign: 34˚ 56' 26.2" N
My GPS:  34˚ 56' 25.09" N

That's a difference of about 11 feet between the two values.  I'd say that's pretty accurate.  Here area the same values for longitude:
Trail Sign: 80˚ 46' 43.6" W
My GPS:  80˚ 46' 44.15" W

That represents a difference of about. 44 feet, at this position of latitude.  Still pretty accurate.

Mystery Find

Waxhaw, NC  2026

Walking along this trail I noticed off to the side this object.  It looks like a base to some sort of pedastal or a support for a column.  I didn't notice any markings on the object so I doubt it's some sort of mile-marker, or boundary marker.  I didn't see any other objects nearby or remnants of other buildings.  I'm not sure what it is.

Another Trail Walk

Waxhaw, NC  2026

Many of the big housing developments in Waxhaw have access to a network of trails.  This was taken along a trail I had not walked before.  Although it looks like a wilderness, large houses can still be seen along the trail giving me some comfort knowing that I'm not far from civilization at all.

Pottery Pavilion

Waxhaw, NC  2026

These sheds belonged to the supervisor's house, located across the street from the Rodman-Heath Mill.  The house and surrounding sheds now are used by a number of businesses including a frame shop, an art gallery, a tea room, and a ceramic studio.

Waxhaw, NC 2026

The smokestack  was once a part of the Rodman-Heath Mill from about 1900 until 1947 and from its opening was the largest employer in Waxhaw.   In 2018, the mill was renovated into a multi-use development containing luxury apartments and a fine restaurant.

Future Historic House

Waxhaw, NC  2026

Waxhaw is a growing community, some say growing a little too quickly.  This is new development located pretty close to if not actually a part of the Waxhaw Historic District.  Perhaps in a 100 years or so, it might be considered historic.

Door With Curtains

Waxhaw, NC  2026

You don't see curtains very much these days in front door windows.  This is the front door to the Walkup-Gamble house pictured in an earlier post, built in 1897.  You can see the historical register plaque just to the right of the door.

Charlotte Roots

Here are the arches depicting the roots of the Charlotte area as they would appear if you drove through this intersection.   There is always a lot of traffic here, and I doubt anyone ever stops to really look at these arches.
