Election Day!!

Waxhaw, NC  2024

It seems like this has been a particularly long election campaign.  I posted this picture a couple of weeks ago and I'm reposting it today to remind everyone to get out and vote.  We've had early voting here in NC and I was able to vote weeks ago.

Upland Depression Swamp Forest

Charlotte, NC  2024

This area holds water in the winter and spring, but dries up in the summer.  When I visited in October, the area hadn't had any rain since tropical storm Helene came through.  The short time that there is water here provides for a unique habitat for frogs and salamanders.

Spooky Crane

Waxhaw, NC  2024

This is for my follower "Taken for Granted" who mentioned in comment to a previous post that he knows someone who collects these cranes.  I bet his cranes are in better shape than this one.

Flat Branch Nature Preserve

Charlotte, NC  2024

This little nature preserve is tucked away in the middle of a Charlotte neighborhood.  This 0.4 mi trail wanders through 43 acres of  what was once open farmland, now slowly reverting to a forest.  It contains some unique ecosystems and an example of a depression forest swamp.

Highway Signs

Waxhaw, NC  2024

NC 16 starts (or ends) in Waxhaw and heads north into Charlotte.  NC 75 heads west into South Carolina.  This one of the busiest intersections in Waxhaw.

Signs of the Times

Waxhaw, NC  2024

It seems to me there are not as many campaign signs this year as in previous years.  This will be my first time voting in North Carolina for president. As of this moment, North Carolina is too close to call one way or the other, with a little over 2 weeks before election day.

Citizens Bank

Rock Hill, SC  2024

Built in 1924-1925, the Citizens Bank Building was the first "high-rise" building in Rock Hill with six stories.  It housed a couple of banks, and an early radio station on the second floor.  An observation deck on the roof was used by the Civil Defense during World War II and can be seen in yesterday's post.

Post Office and Courthouse

Rock Hill, SC  2024

This building was opened in 1932 and replaced an older post office that had been in use from 1906. It served as a post office until 1986.  It also housed a district court, various federal offices, and the local headquarters for several US Congressmen.  It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988

Wire Scuptures

Rock Hill, SC  2024

I found these whimsical wire sculptures while walking around downtown, Rock Hill, SC.  While very interesting, I couldn't  really find a good shot that would really isolate the sculpture from the busy backgrounds.  Perhaps someone with a better photographer's eye would find a good image here.

12 Mile Creek

Waxhaw, NC  2024

The effects of Hurricane Helene were felt throughout the state of North Carolina with the worst of the damage occurring in the northwest part of the state.  The Charlotte area was spared this time, but there was some flooding and downed trees.

Tropical Storm Helene

Waxhaw, NC  2024

After landfall in Florida,  Hurricane Helene caused quite a bit of damage and flooding around the Charlotte area.  Fortunately for us, it wasn't as bad as some parts of North Carolina and Tennessee where there was severe flooding.  The picture above shows a local retention pond, before Helene, taken on September 8.  Below you can see the same pond after Helene came through.

I guess the retention pond worked as it should.  Notice the rock wall divider is under water and the small structure where the water exits the pond is nearly submerged.  All the water here is drained into a local creek on the other side of the tree line.  While the creek has flooded in the past, this time we were spared severe flooding.  We did lose our power for a number of hours, and internet for about a day.  We were pretty luck this time.

I think it has been awhile since this tractor has actually done any real farm work.
