Snow!!

Waxhaw, NC. 2025

I know it's not much by New England standards or for the upper midwest sections of the country, it actually snowed a little this week in the Charlotte area.  I'm not sure it was a measurable amount, but you can see it here.  The worst part of this storm went to our south, dumping many inches of snow through out the gulf states even as far south as Florida.  Our snow was short-lived, once the sun came up, although the temperatures are right around the freezing mark for the rest of the day.

Wolf Moon

Waxhaw, NC. 2025

The first full moon of the year is known as the "Wolf Moon".  Apparently wolves don't hibernate and are quite active during January.  They also howl a lot in January.  This shot was taken on Jan 12, about a day short of the actual full moon.  No special equipment was used, and this was hand-held.  I'm planning on improving these "moon shots" throughout 2025.

The Road Not Taken

Waxhaw, NC. 2025

Although not part of the paved trail, the alignment of trees suggests perhaps that a trail or road went through this part of the land. I'm reminded of the poem by Robert Frost, "The Road Not Taken", the last verse of which is:

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, a I -
And I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Native American Marker Tree?

Waxhaw, NC. 2025

I've passed this tree many times on my walks and I've wondered if it is the result of human hands, or did it grow naturally this way.  One rarely sees such 'right angles' in nature, so it is a bit odd.  Native Americans would bend trees to serve as trail markers, however the last Native Americans left these areas, or merged with nearby tribes back in the 1700's.  Any marker trees made by them would have to be over 200 years old.  I doubt this tree is quite that old and grew this way naturally.

Front Loader

Waxhaw, NC. 2024

Just another sign of the continued growth and development of Waxhaw.  I wanted to drive up to see exactly what was being built, but this front loader was obviously placed here to prevent anyone from doing so.

Happy New Year

Waxhaw, NC. 2024

I was amazed when I first looked at this image taken with my iPhone 14.  I know it's not the greatest picture, but what surprised me was how much I could identify with a hand held iPhone photo without any special settings.  It does lose a lot of detail when uploaded to Blogger.  The original is much better and shows how sensitive current iPhone cameras are.  Orion is seen just above the trees.  The brightest "star" is Jupiter, just a little left of center.  Just left of center on top is asterism Pleiades.

Happy New Year everyone.   One of my many resolutions this year to get out a lot more, not necessarily to take more photos, but to take better photos.
