Great Wagon Road Distilling has been making whisky in the Charlotte area since 2013.  They recently opened a new location in Waxhaw.  The make a whole line of craft, small batch spirits.

This urn was salvaged from the Rodman-Heath Cotton Mill, which operated in Waxhaw from 1898 until 1946 and was the town's largest employer.  At one time it was used to hold chemicals used in the cotton mill.  The clay urn was moved to it's current location in 2003.

Yarn Mural

Directly across the street from yesterday's mural is this whimsical mural of aquatic life. All of the main figures depicted are made from yarn.  The building behind the mural houses a fabric store that offers classes on knitting and crocheting.  This mural changes periodically.

This is Waxhaw's first wall  mural project located downtown.  The artists are Swych and Carla Garrison-Mattos and celebrates Waxhaw's past, present and future.  I'll be sure to photograph the completed mural in the near future.  Check back.

Kaleidoscope Festival

This annual event brings together various community businesses and local artisans.  In past years, downtown city streets were closed to accommodate all the vendors.  The newly opened Downtown Park now serves as a perfect venue for the event and future festivals

 

Spirit of Nature

The town of Waxhaw recently completed a new public space/park located in the historic downtown district.  It was officially opened this past weekend and served to host the town's annual Kaleidoscope Festival.  This sculpture was the centerpiece of the new grounds.

Cicada Nymphs

These are cicadas that recently emerged from the ground and haven't molted yet into their winged-adult form.  I saw these on a number of trees.

 

More Cicadas

 It has been about 4 weeks now since the cicadas have emerged.  So far, the numbers I have seen are no where near what I thought it would be.  I know they are out there, since you can hear them calling.  It's a constant drone, much like a sci-fi movie ray gun noise.  They should only be around for another couple of weeks, and then these broods won't appear again for either another 13 or 17 years.

Cicadas

Perhaps you've heard about the emergence of two broods of cicadas this year through out he middle of our country.  In what is a very rare event,  both a 17-year cicada and a 13-year cicada are emerging at the same time.  We're in the midst of the emergence now, and one can hear the cicadas all throughout the area.  Those with sharp eyes, might be able to make some out on this pillar.  I don't think the numbers of cicadas had peaked when I was out for this walk.  In some places the bugs are everywhere!  Here's a close-up.

 A local land owner built their own connection to the Carolina Thread Trail.

New Trail

Work was recently completed on paving a trail extension into our community.  The newly paved trail connects to the Carolina Thread Trail, a network of trails in this part of North Carolina/South Carolina.  They're popular trails for walking.

Silos

I'm not sure if these silos are still being used or not.  I didn't see any barns nearby.  They were all alone in the middle of a field.  The field looks like it has been cultivated so perhaps the silos are still in use.
